In the more than three years of Joomla!'s existence, there have been 23 releases in total. 15 releases for the 1.0.x series, and eight for 1.5.x. Joomla! 1.0.x is now in maintenance mode, which means that the only reason for a new release is a security issue. For Joomla! 1.5.x, maintenance and security releases are released, like 1.5.8 earlier this week.
Some releases lasted longer than others. The longest between a release has been the nine months that separates the release of 1.0.15 and today. This means that 1.0.15 has been a great base to build websites on, without a lot of changes in the codebase. The shortest time between releases was between the short-lived 1.0.6 and 1.0.7, which were both released on the same day. Somehow people found the feature of 1.0.6 to automatically remove the database password upon saving the global configuration not a pleasant one. In releasing 1.0.7 on the same day as 1.0.6, a release name was chosen that had already used for 1.0.1 (Sunburst).
As the development of what is going to be Joomla! 1.6 progresses, releases of 1.5.x will automatically become less frequent and with less fixes. This is for a number of reasons: a lot of fixes have been done in previous releases, only fixes with a severity of one, two, and three will be fixed, absolutely no new small features will be added.
Here is a list of all Joomla! releases to date:
