On january 10, the Joomla! developers released the 24th Joomla! release. This number is split between 15 releases in 1.0 and nine in 1.5. Last time I listed the Joomla! release dates. This time we will look at the days between Joomla! releases, and compare them between 1.0 and 1.5. The following graph shows the Joomla! releases (x-axis), and the days between each release (y-axis).
The graph is showing that in general 1.0 releases were released a little faster than their 1.5 equivalents. This is surprising, since the code has been almost completely rewritten for Joomla! 1.5.
This year it's probably going to take longer for 1.5 patches to be released. Joomla! 1.6 is being worked on, and after this is released Joomla! 1.5 will probably go into (semi)maintenance mode. In this phase, only the more important bug fixes and security updates will be done.
It is now nearly a year ago that the latest patch in the 1.0 branch has been released. That this is possible shows how stable Joomla! 1.0 has become over time, and it's one of the reasons Joomla! 1.0 will be a classic open source CMS release.
With the last two 1.5 versions, there were two months between releases. If this tempo continues this year, we will get about five more 1.5 releases. This would mean that the number of patches for 1.5 is going to be almost the same as the number of patches that were done for 1.0.
